Check the Failure of the Normal Lighting Supply through an Emergency Light Testing
Power
failure can occur any time, and when it does, emergency lights will provide the
illumination you need to find your way around, especially toward exit routes.
However, like most electrical devices, these lights are prone to wear and tear,
even when they are not being used. The last thing you want to happen is not to have
any lights when an outage occurs. So, consider scheduling routine emergency
light testing to make sure that they are working correctly and that critical
exit routes are safely illuminated.
Emergency
lights are used not just in the event of a power failure, but also when there
is fire or when the lighting system fails. If they do not work, they could result
in accidents, injury, and death. Keep in mind that emergency light testing is
required by law to ensure that critical exit routes are properly illuminated.
Testing itself must be conducted regularly and recorded accordingly to make
sure that you can fulfil the next test. After the test, the electrician will
provide an emergency light certificate to your establishment.
The emergency
light certificate is like an electrical certificate where recommendations
may be given in case your installation requires to be fixed. Dangerous
conditions, defects, damage, and deterioration are just some of the issues that
may be addressed by the certificate, and when found during testing, you should
take an action to have them repaired by a qualified electrician.
Testing
must be conducted as frequently as possible. Schedule weekly emergency light
testing to check that the LEDs are still on. Test every three months by
switching the main power off to make sure that the lights will switch on as
intended. Every six months, test the lights by allowing the batteries to
discharge for an hour and see if the lights can stay on. Annual tests involve
discharging the batteries for three hours to determine if the lights will keep
working.
